Composition:

NITROFURANTOIN ORAL SUSPENSION USP (25 mg/ 5 mL)

Therapeutic Category:

Antibiotic for Urinary Tract Infection

Mechanism of Action:

Nitrofurantoin is an antibacterial agent specific for urinary tract infections and is bactericidal in urine at therapeutic doses. Nitrofurantoin is reduced by bacterial flavoproteins to reactive intermediates which alter bacterial ribosomal proteins and other macromolecules. As a result of such inactivation’s, the vital biochemical processes of protein synthesis, aerobic energy metabolism, DNA synthesis, RNA synthesis and cell wall synthesis are inhibited.

Indications:

It is used to prevent and treat infections of the bladder, kidney and other parts of the urinary tract.

Dosage:

Adult

The normal dosage depends on the type of infection you have. The usual dosage are:

• For treatment of infections: two to four 5 ml spoonfuls four times a day for seven days.
• For prevention of further infections: two to four 5 mL spoonfuls to be taken once a day.
• For prevention of infections during surgery: two 5 mL spoonfuls four times a day on the day of the operation and three days thereafter.

Use in children and infants aged over three months:

The dose depends on the weight of the child and will be provided by your doctor. Follow your doctor’s instructions exactly.

Children below 3 months of age should not be given Nitrofurantoin Oral Suspension.
