Mechanism of Action:
Protein synthesis is essential for bacterial replication which occurs in ribosomes. Azithromycin binds to a portion of rRNA (a component of 50S ribosomal subunit) causing inhibition of 50S ribosomal subunit assembly through that binding. Hence it stops bacterial protein synthesis and prevents the growth of the bacteria.
Indications:
Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Acute bacterial sinusitis, Community-acquired pneumonia,Pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes as an alternative to first-line therapy, Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, Urethritis and cervicitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Genital ulcer disease in men due to Haemophilus ducreyi (chancroid)
Dosage:
Adult: In uncomplicated Chlamydia trachomatis urethritis and cervicitis: 1gm single dose For all other indications the total dose is 1.5gm : 500mg once daily * 3 days, or, 500mg on day 1, 250 mg once daily* 4days
