Mechanism of Action: Metronidazole works by entering the cells of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Once inside the cell, it is reduced by the electron transport proteins, resulting in the formation of toxic metabolites. These metabolites bind to the DNA of the microorganism, causing DNA strand breakage and inhibiting DNA synthesis, leading to cell death. This action is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, as they rely on anaerobic metabolism, which activates the drug.

Indications:

 Amoebiasis 

 Giardiasis 

 Trichomoniasis 

 Bacterial Vaginosis

 Anaerobic bacterial infections 

 Helicobacter pylori

Dosage:

For the treatment of amoebiasis or giardiasis in adults:

Initial dose: 400mg orally three times a day for 7-10 days.

For bacterial infections:

Typical dosage: 250mg to 500mg orally three times a day for 7-10 days (depending on the severity and type of infection).

For Trichomoniasis:

Single-dose: 2g as a one-time oral dose.
