Composition:
Methylcobalamin Tablets USP (1500mcg)
Therapeutic Category:
Vitamin B12
Mechanism of Action:
Methylcobalamin is a potent and active form of naturally occurring vitamin B12. It can be used to prevent or treat pathology arising from a lack of vitamin B12 intake (vitamin B12 deficiency). Vitamin B12 helps in synthesis of methionine and S-adenosylmethionine. It is required for integrity of myelin, neuronal function, proper red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis. It also is utilized for prevention and treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency anemia and pernicious anemia. Methylcobalamin has been found to be important in maintaining and regenerating peripheral nerves and promoting the process of myelination, leading to functional restoration of myelin sheath. It has also been postulated that B12 could promote nerve regeneration by up-regulating gene transcription and decrease ectopic nerve firing, which might explain why it helps alleviate painful symptoms.
Indications:
The active form of Vitamin B12 has been found to be useful in conditions like Neuropathic pain (Diabetic neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, subacute herpetic neuralgia), Vitamin B12 deficiency & pernicious anemia as well as in male infertility (Vitamin B12 may increase sperm count, motility, increase functionality of reproductive organs, decrease homocysteine toxicity, and prevent premature ejaculation).
