Composition: Lactulose Solution USP (3.33gm/5ml in 200ml)

Therapeutic Category: Osmotic Laxative

Mechanism of Action: Lactulose, a synthetic derivative of Lactose is broken down into formic acid and acetic acid in the large intestine by Saccharolytic bacteria. These acids in combination with hydrogen and methane is known to enhance intraluminal gas formation and increase gut motility, hence leading to stool softening and an increase in the frequency of bowel movements in constipation. Acids formed in the large intestine also allow nitrogenous wastes like ammonia to be diffused to the colon, hence reducing the level of ammonia in the circulation that is known to be the basis for the use of lactulose in the treatment of Portal Systemic Encephalopathy, which is further backed up by the fact that acidic environment in the colon aids in the elimination of urease producing bacteria.

Indications: Indicated in the symptomatic treatment of chronic constipation, Also as an adjunct to protein restriction and supportive therapy for the prevention and treatment of portal-systemic encephalopathy (PSE)

Dosage: Constipation: As a single dose or divided doses Children >14 years and Adults: 15-45ml/day Children (7-14 years): 15ml/day Children (1-6 years): 5-10ml/day (<6 years): upto 5ml Dosage shall be reduced if diarrohea occurs Hepatic Encephalopathy: For adults Starting dose: 30 - 50 ml 3 times daily, adjusted to get 2-3 soft stools daily.
