Mechanism of Action: Hyoscine butylbromide(HBB) is an anticholinergic agent that exerts a spasmolytic action on the smooth muscle of the gastro-intestinal, biliary and genito-urinary tracts. It is a quaternary ammonium compound which blocks the action of acetylcholine at parasympathetic sites (both muscarinic and nicotinic receptors) in smooth muscles and secretory glands. HBB reduces the motility of the gastrointestinal tract and the urogenital tracts, demonstrating its usefulness in the relief of spasms in these regions, which may be associated with gastroenteritis, colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, biliary colic, cystitis, ureteric colic, and primary dysmenorrhea.
