Mechanism of Action:
Doxycycline, a tetracycline antibiotic, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms. This action interferes with the initiation of protein synthesis, leading to the suppression of bacterial growth and reproduction.
Indications:
Indicated for the treatment of chest, lung or nasal infections, e.g. acute worsening of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, e.g. cystitis, urethritis, eye infections, sexually transmitted diseases e.g. gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia, fevers associated with louse or tick bites, treatment and prevention of malaria, when chloroquine is not effective.
Dosage:
Usual Dose (Chest, lung or nasal, urinary tract, eye and other infections) : 2 capsule of Doxycap (200 mg) on the first day, then one capsule (100 mg) daily. The length of treatment is dependent on the infection being treated.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases: One capsule (100mg) twice daily for 7 - 10 days.
Primary and Secondary Syphilis: Two capsule (200 mg) twice daily for 2 weeks. Your doctor will continue to monitor you after your treatment has stopped.
Fevers associated with louse or tick bites: One or two capsule depending on severity.
Treatment of malaria, when chloroquine is not effective: Two capsule (200mg) daily for at least 7 days.
Prevention of malaria: One capsule (100mg) daily from 1-2 days before travelling to a malarial area until 4 weeks after returning.
Prevention of scrub typhus: Two capsule (200 mg) in a single dose.
