Therapeutic Category: First generation H1 and Serotonin receptor antagonist

Mechanism of Action: Cyproheptadine exerts its antihistamine and antiserotonin effects by competing with free histamine and serotonin with their respective receptors. Antagonism of serotonin on the appetite center of the hypothalamus might be responsible for cyproheptadine's ability to stimulate the appetite. (Due to inhibitory effect of serotonin on appetite)

Indications:

Indicated for the treatment of various allergic symptoms - including dermatographia, rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis due to allergens and foods, angioedema and urticaria. Also, widely used for appetite stimulation and migraine prophylaxis (Off-Label)

Dosage: For allergic rhinitis and allergy symptoms: Usual adult dosing: 4mg three times daily Therapeutic range being 4-20mg/day in divided doses For appetite stimulation: Initially, 2 mg upto 4 times daily with meals gradually increased to, 4 -8mg 4 times per day with meals. 7years to 14 years: 2 teaspoonful 2 to 3 times daily Children of 2-6 years: 1 teaspoonful 2 to 3 times a day. Total daily dose of 0.25mg/kg. For migraine prophylaxis: 2-4mg twice daily
