Therapeutic Category: First generation H1 and Serotonin receptor antagonist

Mechanism of Action: Cyproheptadine exerts its antihistamine and antiserotonin effects by competing with free histamine and serotonin with their respective receptors. Antagonism of serotonin on the appetite center of the hypothalamus might be responsible for cyproheptadine's ability to stimulate the appetite. (Due to inhibitory effect of serotonin on appetite)

Indications: Indicated for the treatment of various allergic symptoms - including dermatographia, rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis due to allergens and foods, angioedema and urticaria. Also, widely used for appetite stimulation (Off-Label)

Dosage: Adult: 2mg-4mg up to four times a day (Off-label)
