Mechanism of Action:
Thiamine, also called vitamin B1, is an essential micronutrient, that plays a key role in energy metabolism, normal growth and development and proper functioning of the heart ,nervous and digestive systems. A regular dietary supply is required to maintain tissue thiamine levels. The richest food sources of thiamine are whole grains, yeasts, meats, legumes, and nuts.
Indications:
Thiamine is indicated for the treatment of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, beriberi and thiamine deficiency related to chronic alcoholism. It is also used in thiamine deficiencies due to increased dietary requirements, excretion or reduced intake and absorption. Thiamine deficiency might be seen with chronic alcohol consumption, heavy exertion, excessive carbohydrate intake, as well as Type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus.
Dosage:
Adults and adolescents >12 years, Mild deficiency: 50-100mg per day Severe deficiency: 200-300mg per day in divided doses
