Therapeutic Category: Second generation H1 Antihistamine

Mechanism of Action: Levocetirizine selectively binds to histamine H1 receptors, acts as an inverse agonist at the receptors and hence opposes the associated effects like hives, itchy skin, red eyes, facial swelling, nasal congestion, difficulty in breathing, or asthma attacks (Allergy like symptoms) caused due to H1 receptor activation.

Indications:

Indicated for the treatment of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria. Also used in variety of mild allergy symptoms.

Dosage:

• Adults and children >12 years: 5 mg PO every day in the evening; some patients may respond to 2.5 mg/day • Children, 6-12 years: 2.5 mg PO qDay in evening 6 months to 5 years: 1.25 mg PO qDay in evening
